The National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI) reports that one in five US adults experiences a mental illness every year. One in 12 people who struggles with a mental illness also struggles with a substance use disorder.

Genetics, environmental factors, life stress, trauma, and even certain substances can cause or trigger a mental illness. Untreated, these feelings can lead to major physical and psychological physical illnesses or to behaviors that can become destructive and addictive. Just as important as it is to have you physical body checked by your primary care provider, your mental health well-being plays a vital role with your overall physical health.

Medication Management Services are a spectrum of patient-centered care that optimizes safe, effective, appropriate drug therapy. Care is provided through collaboration with patients and their healthcare providers here at Stellar Mental Health & Mediation.

Researchers believe that mental illness is from a chemical imbalance in a person’s brain and that medications can work on these imbalances to help reduce symptoms or relieve them completely.

It is important to understand

  • Every medication has its benefits and its risks: Deciding to take a medication is about balancing the possible benefits with possible side effects.
  • Medications often help the most when they’re part of an overall treatment programs: Plans can include therapy (individual and family), case management, & community based rehabilitation.
  • Medication is not a cure-all: The goal of medication(s) is to stabilize a chemical imbalance. By suddenly stopping a medication, the symptoms could likely return.
  • It can take time to feel better: Some medications take a few days to a few weeks to begin their effects. You also may have to try more than one medication before the right fit is identified but, for many people, it’s worth the wait.
